Every masterpiece begins as a sketch. Just like an artist, a genetic designer starts by thinking and experimenting at a high level - adding the details later. Genetic constructor allows you to skip the whiteboard and forget the sequence editors you are used to. You can go straight to your web browser to begin crafting your masterpiece.
- Sketch - Begin a design by sketching its intent. For example, a strong promoter driving a gene in a specific genetic context.
- Import - After sketching, you can attach your genetic sequence data. Do this easily by importing from popular databases like NCBI and iGEM, from our shared public directory, or from your own library.
- Create Combinatorial Libraries - Test hundreds of gene combinations in a single design by building your own libraries.
- Share - Share all of your designs easily with your colleagues.

Drag and drop from a library of SBOL operators to sketch and design your constructs. You can focus on the function and your final design intent - leaving sequences for later.

Once you've sketched your design, you can search for your favorite gene in a database such as NCBI - then drag it straight into your project.
Or, you can import from your local files in either csv format or GenBank format to create your custom building blocks on the fly.
Search for Runx1 in NCBI and drag&drop it onto your CDS block to add the saved sequence to it.
Want to test a promoter library and a tag library with your favorite gene?
With Genetic Constructor, you can use List Blocks to store lists of possible sequences. This allows you to preview many combinations with a single design.
In this example the promoter, CDS and terminator contain list blocks. Once the csv is uploaded, the options appear in their respective block. The sequence viewer (at the bottom of the screen) will show the active option - this can be easily toggled while viewing with the sequence updating live.
You can export and import your projects as GenBank files to share with your colleagues - or to use with other tools. There are also more publishing options on the way.
